Labour Day Public Holiday
Mar. 5th, 2018 05:10 pmHow's everyone enjoying the public holiday - those of you who share it with me? I'm helping my landlord shift some wood; today's thrill. [edit] Hours later, the wood - the cut up tree branches from my place - duly shifted by me, landlord, landlord's friend and landlord's friend's child labour. Don't know how everyone else ended up but for me it was on the couch, appreciating the full icy blast of the aircon. I made the rats move to make room. A fitting end to Labour Day, I guess. Oh, and there was icecream provided. We work for food....
At one point half of the child labour and I had to wait at landlord's house while she went to rescue friend - who had gone home to collect bankcard so she could buy petrol - but her car conked out before actually leaving the street. I felt better about flaking out in a chair when I noticed that child labour - who's about 12 - was doing precisely the same :-) Landlord's friend had refused to accept financial help to pay for her petrol, so landlord has plotted with one of her kids to hide a $20 bill in wherever he thinks is a good place, to be discovered later!
It's been reeeally hot today. We pick our timing well. The poor rats were hot too, I hadn't expected the temperature to rise that fast while I was gone, so aircon went on and I closed the doors of my living room/kitchen area. All of us sprawled on the couch or in the cage - that was one of the rats who stayed in the cage - and I'm just starting to wake from the dead now. An air-conditioned office tomorrow is going to feel okay. I'm sure my carrying capacity has increased, which is good, but basically I'm just not used to anything like a heavy slog.
I get to keep a share of the wood in the old barbecue out back. Might even see if one can cook steaks on it, come winter. It's practically an antique; must be as old as the house, which is more than 80 years, with the odd bit of rust.
