Message from the Head Cheese
May. 17th, 2015 04:35 pmI've warned my friend
gillpolack in Canberra that I was going to mention that winter was here, in case she was drinking hot coffee when she saw it and so did herself an injury. I believe Canberra was down below zero this morning, -5 or so. Perth is enjoying a robust 15^C or so at the moment, but rather a lot of rain, which is what "winter" means to us. These days I have a clothes dryer, so the characteristic of laundry hanging inside the house is no more, but I still have to ride a bike, even an e-bike, to fetch groceries.
Today this meant a dash to the shops during a rare fine break, since I was out of most necessities. Cereal, eggs, nearly out of milk, bananas. The citizens of Bassendean, undeterred by the weather, were hauling their green waste to the verge for it is collection on Monday. The local shopping centre was also crowded with shoppers as for the heralding of the End of Days; get it now while you still can! I made it home only slightly damp, which was exceedingly lucky. Later in the afternoon this happened:

I haven't done much else of note today; did my housework yesterday and also another play-date between two groups of rats, which went ok until Winston found little Barnaby in his sleeping spot, inside Winston and Cade's rat palace and went postal. Still, we've had progress in the sense that I was able to get my hands in there, rescue Barnaby, whack Winston on the behind and grab Barnaby's friends for evacuation without any chomp marks on me. This is because I am now accepted as the Big Rat, Alpha or Head Cheese by these boys, who are all rescues from very bad situations. Still, it would be so nice if everybody would just get along!
This is a cunning segue to my new icon, which is for acceptance for all people, of whatever orientation, whatever you care to name. There are too many initials for me to remember and too many variations of description, so I equally cunningly cut and pasted the site's description. It can be found on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com
An ONLINE EVENT! International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia (IDAHoT) and LGBTIQ discrimination is about showing your support for ending discrimination against LGBTIQ people across the world for all humans.
Discrimination can be as drastic as murder or as apparently minor as making someone uncomfortable; blatant or subtle. I don't know how to make it stop, but everyone's small steps will change society, perhaps without us knowing for some time that it has changed. The marking of this day involved a pledge, to commit to some change to push discrimination back. Mine would be to commit to representing the variations of humanity as well as I can in my writing and also to have more personal courage.
