Conventional thoughts
Jan. 29th, 2014 09:30 pmI've started thinking about Swancon, our annual Perth sf convention. Of course, I think about it periodically at any time during the year, but it's now three months away and any other distracting holiday is now past.
It's quite costly, so each year I debate with myself whether to get a hotel room or commute. Each has its advantages. Whichever I do, I always do some trips home to feed and care for the rat clan, but having a room means one can get to the evening programming and also retreat to it if everything gets to be too much/fatigue descends. This year, though, I find the hotel is booked out and though I'm on a waiting list, I'm not going to hold my breath. I should've tried to book earlier, is all.
Easter falls late this year, 17-21st April, so at least I have more time to save for the attendance fee after some truly horrible bills. I've also had to get new glasses, which were definitely needed, so anything voluntary will have to wait. Not having a room will mean I'm there less as I just get too tired, but it'll be cheaper. I'm thinking of going to the con later in the days so as to be more alert for evening things and perhaps not attending all of the days.
