Winds of greed
Oct. 31st, 2012 11:52 amI'm not a great fan of change, I freely admit. But when change happens out of greed, then I get annoyed. I discovered today that a small shop in our local centre, which sold chicken in every form you could think of, had closed down. No warning, no goodbye notice. I talked to one of the older checkout operators in Coles next door, who of course knew all the goss, and found that the Bassendean Shopping Centre had doubled the little shop's rent and told the owners they would also have to renovate. Like the fruit-and-veg next to it, they declined this kind offer and split.
We lose a very popular small shop, the owners lose a livelihood and the greedy shopping centre doesn't get any money at all. That's the only satisfaction in the whole affair. It's happening a lot lately. I don't know why the Le's Fruit and Veg closed, or why the local fish & chip place was bulldozed this morning, but I know the shopping centre has a Grand Plan for improvements, supposedly at the urging of the populace. Not me, for one. They're rapidly getting rid of everything but the two big stores, opposing chains.
Off this topic; I hope everyone I know in the US is okay. Your storm is our number one news story right now. Take care.
