Bring Out Your Dead
Nov. 14th, 2010 10:45 amI've spent some of Sunday morning lugging my junk out to the verge. Next week it'll get collected, but a lot of the stuff won't still be there! Verge shopping is thriving. I added my two old rat cages to the pile, having bought the fuzzies a lovely new (and huge) Ferret Kingdom to live in last year.
Then I went off on the bike to return a rented DVD and around in a circle measuring four or so kilometres to get some groceries and home. By then, the cages were gone :-) I hope to locate a bookcase somewhere myself, but these are much sought-after and don't stay in view much longer than the cages did. I was very fortunate last time to acquire a HUGE bookcase, over 7ft tall, being carted out to the verge by a friend's neighbour. My friend tipped me off and we got one bookcase each. Can you imagine two such items being not wanted? [shakes head] There was nothing wrong with them except that they were very dusty! On another occasion I found a low, longish bookcase that was actually painted the same colour as my walls.
Couches are a frequent item, together with a lot of firewood in various forms - people with proper fireplaces could save heaps of money retrieving it and probably do - and this year I've noticed a lot of televisions. I'd guess quite a few of them still work. On the corner of my street there was a big freezer with a sign "WORKING FREEZER" which I spotted on the way to work. It wasn't there when I got home either. Dead home gym equipment, chairs, pots, boxes. Beds and mattresses, including some frames in pretty good shape. Gives me a good idea of what survivors of the apocalypse would be likely to find on scrounging trips, especially after a bit of time had passed. That firewood, even in bookcase form, would be very valuable!
Got to go; there's still some streets I haven't checked for that bookcase, now that the ones I scored last time are full.
