I couldn't get my head around how strange and awful was the story of Tyler Clementi, which was in the newspapers as well as online, I think. First the part where the moronic room-mates post footage of somebody having sex to You Tube, and the part where Tyler believes he has to kill himself over it.
Cyber-bullying is one of the most horrible things to have come out of the Internet era, IMO. I was bullied at school, enough that I hated and feared the place and most of the inhabitants, for most of my adolescence. I am only thankful that the Net did not exist during my schooldays. Combine this with the mentality of people who are that contemptuous of someone who is not like them and you have something quite evil.
I think if Tyler had, instead, felt secure enough to go for these malicious idiots instead, a jury might well have let him off, but his world clearly did not allow him to feel that secure.
I don't know the stories of the other boys, but I know that they barely had a chance to live at all and they did nothing wrong.
It's a bizarre world.

It has been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that's exactly what we'd like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools to spread a message of love, unity and peace.
