You know how, when you've been sick, the first day you think you're recovered and you head out to do your usual stuff, there's an immediate slow-down order from your insides? I was bushed after a mere trip to the fresh produce market today, feeling like I'd just donated blood. It's the worst thing about a cold, which really isn't that severe, more annoying. You think, Oh, this won't be so bad and then it comes back and whacks you with its bloody great slimy tail.
This Sunday, the most energetic thing I did was clean the bathroom and give the White Cloud Mountain Minnows in the pond their weekly feeding. Last weekend, while petsitting for friends, I also raided their ex-swimming pool for more tadpoles and caught 11, which I installed in my pond. They show no interest in the fish food or in the boiled lettuce I tried them with, so that means the pond has enough algae of its own. That also means the minnows shouldn't be interested in the fish food but so far as I can tell, for very small fish, they're bottomless. This is a good thing; the pond also never has a wriggler problem, thanks to them.
[EDIT] The rats provided the main excitement for Saturday night. After I'd gone to bed, I heard agonised eeking coming from the cage and thought I'd better check, in case someone had misjudged a distance and was dangling by a foot or something. Turned on the lights, peered in and saw Jasper, with Theo in a headlock, industriously grooming him. Despite appearances, Theo was cooperating. Both stared as though to ask what my problem was. "Sorry, boys. Carry on!"
