Religious types think these are the End Days. We're not that lucky, guys. Yes, this weekend showed us the extremes of fire and floods, mostly everywhere else BUT Western Australia for once, but these just convince me we need to pay more attention to the Greens and Al Gore and everyone else who's said we can't keep carrying on as though we own this place (the planet).

I'm wondering whether I picked the wrong state to shut down (black humour here) in my stories of a burning future where folk in a mostly-deserted future Perth live by night, Heartsblood, The Sun People and Paper Dragons. Queensland is half underwater, much of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia are on fire and I believe if they catch the arsonists responsible, the bastards should be tried for mass murder. Burning at the stake in the middle of some of the ruins they've created sounds good.

We do have our own troubles, of course, a moron wandering around Kings Park in the wake of the previous fires setting more of them. He's been sighted but not caught. Next week the temperatures rise but hopefully not to match the almost 47^C (about 116^F) Melbourne had two days ago. Leave off the outside exercise, people! I thought the Government was being patronising to tell people things like drink water, stay in the shade during summer but apparently not; my mother said one of the 70-plus types at her croquet club fainted today, grimly attempting Not To Let The Side Down. (shakes head).

Waah. Keep well, people.
