Baby Rats - I can explain...

You see, there was this petshop and these aquariums inside containing baby rats...and the person next to me, whom I had asked to please control me, I only wanted to see if this place had decent cages, said, "Go on, do it!"

I wasn't that hard to convince, since I knew it's not good to keep a rat on his own and Luka did miss Zach, so I picked out two little guys and they came home with us to meet Luka! It is way, way easier to introduce babies to an adult rat than if the newcomer is older. No blood, very little yelling, only a baby rat flipped on to his back and held down to show him who is in charge. One of the babies went right into the cage on his own and the other soon followed. Luka seemed fine with this, only wanting to resume his nap while the little guys checked out their new hotel with great excitement. A few hours later, they're tucked into the Snuggle Sack behind Luka - or else he ate them, I can't actually tell right now!

My sympathies re Zach. I'm not sure I could take all the body blows you do with the loss of your guys.
And congrats re the new family members. Names? Rats? Hmm I can think of a few - Peter, Nick, Carl all come to mind.

No no, rats are much maligned. Nasty humans should not be compared with rattus.

Yay!!! So what sort of rats are the newcomers? And were they being sold as pets, or as -- gasp -- snake delicacies? Hopefully, Luka did not consume his new little brothers.

No, they were sold as pets. I wouldn't go near a shop I thought was doing that sort of trade. They're a black hooded (Jasper) and a fawn hooded (Theo) as are the majority of pet rats. That's okay. And Luka is being quite nice to them. They don't measure up to Zach yet, obviously, but they'll do as heaters in the hammock and he'll get to know them better soon.

Yay, baby rats!

Still so sorry about Zach, I hope Luka cheers up soon..

CongRATs!

How's Luka handling the two little terrors?

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the little ones can move, and how much energy they seem to have!

prk.

One of the little guys saw Luka and immediately eeked, "Mum!" That's what it looked like. Theo tackled Luka and knocked him over, yeah, despite being about one sixth the size so Luka had to have let him. When he's near Luka, he stays as close as he can. Luka has apparently judged him no threat at all - the only one he's knocked over is Jasper, the feisty little black hooded and that was just in the first few hours. At the moment Luka is perched on the top of a chair. I think he wants some peace and quiet. They had a party in the cage last night.
