Earth Hour
I just finished observing Earth Hour, which meant switching off all the electrical stuff and setting up two candles out of rat reach.
Earlier I read a lot of the "for" and "against" views. I'm most closely aligned with the view which says yes, it's a symbol and probably does not do much that's actually useful but a symbol is a beginning. Maybe the govt and big companies will realise they don't need to keep those big buildings lit all night? Maybe people will realise the whole house doesn't need to be lit for a couple of people watching tv?
I also thought it would be a bit difficult. If I was going to do it properly, the fridge would have to be included and so would things I'd have to reset. Then I decided if it was easy, what was the point? They'd go off.
The hour felt a lot like being in a pagan ritual. I think it was the smoky smell from the candles! The house felt very peaceful. Since I can't actually hear electric current, I'm not sure what the difference was but I was aware of something. It could've been the setting for an end of the world scenario - then I became aware of the outside noise which I'm not usually, not to that extent. The train nearly half a kilometre away rattled and hooted as though it was roaring down the street. I could hear various sounds from the neighbours. No, they weren't joining in. The suburb seemed to be carrying on much as it always does on a Saturday night.
Eventually I went back inside, having spent some time in the dark back yard with all its cicadas and managed to read by the light of one of the candles. I finished reading 2012 in keeping with the end of the world theme. Some of those stories felt as though it couldn't be far off!
