rattfan: Demons (Demons)

Damn, damn, mutter, damn!

Gaming got cancelled *again* with about half an hour's notice.  Can't yell at anyone, which is annoying, since it's due to car trouble and personal exhaustion [the same people], but still.....shit, shit, shit.   It happened last week because someone's job involved evening work, which happened this week too but we'd arranged to play without him and have his character be extremely heroic.  This time the bike was packed, I'd gotten the rats out early and given them dinner early, warning them they would also have to go home early.

Now they get to be the only creatures pleased with this outcome.

Damn, damn, mutter, damn.

I've had a few days off work this week.  Public holiday for the King's birthday on Monday.  Yes, I know, it isn't his birthday but Western Australia has a creative approach to such things, and too many holidays already around the actual date so they just moved it.  I'm not working Wednesday or Thursday, so I just had to take the one day off to get a six-day break.  On the weekend there was weekend stuff.  Parental wrangling on Saturday and....stuff on Sunday that has sunk from active memory.

Monday I rode over to my local DIY store Bunnings, to pick up some putty I needed to fix holes in my skirting boards [thanks, rats] and left with two plants, a new pot and a sack of potting mix as well.

I had to go pick up my mum's hearing aid batteries on Tuesday [and get grabbed by the audiologist explaining yet again how my mum really needs a new hearing aid!] also a bit of shopping in the swanky shopping precincts of Claremont nearby, then delivering batteries and a dire promise to M that we were planning her kidnap so she would get the new hearing aid.  Beyond that, just taking it easy, bumbling around.

I discovered it was Royal Show Week, which I'd forgotten was upon us.  This started off as an agricultural show and is still that, with the addition of a bunch of carnival rides and Show Bags full of hideously expensive treats.  This year, the government is funding half the ticket costs, which though it's a nice gesture, immediately made me think "bread and circuses" because of the huge problems right now involved with inflation, cost of living, skyrocketing rents and so on.  The govt can't fix these, so they pay for folks to ride on carousels and rollercoasters.

The trains also become unbearable, crowded with yelling kids and their parents, who are often towing these huge wagons - well, huge for something you haul by hand - full of the supposed necessities for taking the kids out, but they look to me like they could double as bug-out containers for the apocalypse.  So yeah, I could have chosen my holiday break better, but this was the last public holiday before Christmas.

Today I rode to Guildford, another short trip of only a couple of kilometres, to visit the local secondhand bookshop where I found a copy of New York to Dallas by J.D. Robb and a modern-day mystery, Mourning Raga, set in India  by Ellis Peters.  Well, her modern day, which is 1969.  No idea if it'll be as good as the Brother Cadfaels, but we'll see.

I also looked around the furniture store next to the bookshop, because my armchair is on its last legs, not entirely due to rat depredation.  The footrest part of the recliner is busted and I have to use a cushion because the seat has gotten uncomfortable, thanks to busted upholstery and wires.  It's a very nice furniture store with some lovely chairs, but I could fly to Europe on what some of them cost.  So it'll be Ikea, I think.  I plan to actually go to Ikea and sit in a few of them before choosing one, but I know their prices are more my speed.

I'm still annoyed about the gaming cancellation.  It always seems to happen when I'm having a holiday and am therefore more alert and keen to play.

Let me know when you're doing IKEA and we might grab a coffee there.

I find it strange that you get a public holiday for the monarch's birthday but we don't! I think it was good that the date was moved to a time where there's less bank holidays. I do wish we had one around now-ish. The last one was the end of August and then there's nothing until Christmas. There's been quite a bit of discussion here about how we could do with another bank holiday in between the two.
