This heatwave will pass
I had a look over some of the things I watched last year. It’s not everything; there would be several I didn’t like enough to remember, and there are certainly some I had hopes for which turned out disappointing. As I write, I still have two episodes of Bodies to go, and that one is a mindtwister. Can’t say much without risk of spoiling and this one must not be spoilered!
Just finished For All Mankind’s fourth season and that definitely did not disappoint. It’s projected to have seven seasons and I hope it survives. I wish it had happened, instead of our version of the space race.
Other shows:
The Last of Us [season 1] Enjoyed this a lot.
From [season 2] Also a mindtwister, from same people who did Lost but makes somewhat more sense. Somewhat. No promises.
Dead City [stopped] Watching Maggie glower at Negan gets old fast. Also gave up watching the Daryl Dixon offshoot. I loved Daryl but more as part of the Walking Dead ensemble. Also this one had a very annoying child in it.
Severance [season 1] True horror. Imagine never leaving your workplace….and that your other self, which only knows the world outside work, set you up for it.
Invasion [stopped] Bleh. More annoying “special” children.
Foundation [stopped after 1 season]
The Brain [nf]
Indiana Jones – Ark, Crusade rewatch and the new one at Rooftop Cinema.
I've now read as far as number 7 of Murderbot. The Murderbot stories are full of good quotes. Latest favourite is, “I wanted to talk to a human right now about as much as I wanted to lose a couple of limbs and have a conversation about my feelings.” I would like to have that on a sign above my desk at work, changing “wanted” to “want.”
The last few days in the journal:
8th. Holed up because of heat. Trying to write. I am not sure anyone would be interested in the results of me writing now, except for a very few friends. Would anyone like to see a zombie apocalypse set in Perth?
Had a prolonged email discussion with Bunnings about a missing part in the new juicer I bought, in the interests of not using any more plastic bottles. Many pictures and explanations later that yes, I did look inside the large cone and the small cone was not in there, and finally, the replacement bit is on its way. I’m told.
9th. Went to Cottesloe beach, too choppy/strong current to swim but tried anyway. Have been swimming at this beach periodically for over 50 years, so not afraid of its currents but this was definitely one to respect.
10th. Rode to Guildford Secondhand Bookshop and got Encore in Death and Payback in Death. People who read their new books and then pass them on are a blessing upon those of us who grab them and then hoard them forever!
11th Parental wrangling, the Shine visit. New coordinator for M [now 93] wanted a meet and greet with all the elderly people she assists. The last one, who just joined the organisation four months ago with great plans, has now moved on. This one, Jess, assures us she plans to stick, made quite a point of it, in fact. We discussed M’s wobbliness and worries about falling in the bathroom and assistance therein. This is honestly not something M ever wanted to consider and I wouldn’t either, it’s an awful prospect. M doesn’t need any help in the actual shower but Shine also provides a “stand by” service where someone comes to their place for half an hour and is just there while they take a shower, to aid if needed. Jess told us about half the people she looks after, which is about 15 individuals, need such assistance.
Unfortunately M could not hear anything Jess said. Though she was quite clear to me, M said she was too quiet and I had to play the role of interpreter, boiling down the information as briefly as I could to repeat to M, and then checking with Jess as to whether I had it right.
The communication difficulty was unintentionally hilarious at one point where M was bitching about her hearing aid, which was fritzing, and I said to her that we really had to see to it being fixed, never mind that it wasn’t very long since she’d been to the repair place. M [getting about half of this] “What needs fixing?” Me. “YOUR HEARING AID!” M, Jess and myself all lost it. Maybe you had to be there.
12th Very hot, up early to water and do food run. Reading/writing/messing around online.
13th Thunder and lightning show last night and a bit of rain. Today I'm holed up with aircon because of heat, up to 41^C predicted. At 2pm we have 40^C. I'd hoped for gaming next week - the gamesmaster had said good chance - but another gamer has now caught the plague, so becoming unlikely. Sigh. We go on.

That is a good service. I do that for my mum when she's in the shower. I think just knowing someone is there, just in case, is enough sometimes.
40°C is no fun. I experienced that once when I was in Boston, staying with my then-boyfriend. His house didn't have any air con at all so it was horrible. We spent the day in the library where it was cooler.
