My computer crashed finally on Sunday, after giving me barely enough time to update my backups. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] muffinmonster for the reminder to do this :-) Then on Monday I took it to the neighbouring computer shop for a brain transplant but discovered it was actually too old (6 years) for this to be usefully done, so I decided I would have to upgrade.

I generally regard this with about as much enthusiasm as going to the dentist but the Computer Shop People were sympathetic fannish types who used language a luddite writer could understand :-) [During the computer discussion we also compared the two Battlestar Galacticas and whether Starbuck should have changed sex. I knew I was in the right place!]

So I now have a new (well, secondhand computer) XP instead of 98 and am busy loading the contents of all those floppies back on to comp. My screen is 17 inch instead of 14 and I am very happy with this. The comp is also *black* which goes beautifully with my black desk :-)

Unfortunately the one thing I didn't get around to doing was printing out my address book with everyone's emails because my printer was playing silly buggers and claiming there was no paper. Look! It's there, you &*^%$ machine! I meant to go back and do it later when printer was in a better mood but later evaporated. So if people who usually email me could do it, that would be good as I need to collect you all again.

Ooooh, shiny black computer...ooooohhhhh....

Yes. I'm not saying that was the *only* reason for picking that one but it was a definite bonus.

If you have any problems with the new pc give us a buzz.

Thanks, will do :-) I'm kind of pleased I managed to get this far on my own. Hey, if you put a floppy disk into the drive and it comes up with the message "this disk is unformatted" and you know that's not so, the disk is stuffed, right?

Glad to see you're back with us :-) Hope things are better.

Yeah pretty much. You can try reformatting the disk but then you would lose all your data on it. Best thing to do is just ditch it if it is throwing up errors.

It's good to be back as well. Just in time for exams!

Woo, glad you did that backup! I learned this the hard way when my harddisk started giving me similar error messages and I didn't feel like doing a backup right away - in the end I had to do the much needed backup while my computer was crashing every couple of minutes and I almost had a heart attack every single time, praying that it would reboot just one more time ;)

And congrats on the new computer, it sounds great! Does that mean that you have sound now and can play videos?

I have sound but it's still not fast enough to play videos!
