HOLIDAY THE FIRST

I was due to go on leave from Friday.  Then the bottom fell out of the work and we got a general message suggesting that requests for further leave would be smiled upon.  This after some folks had been refused it earlier.  Fatigue was already setting in so I said sure, why not and after supervisor initially forgot to let me know [and various other delays/messages to do with them changing some of the computer systems] all was approved.

Some years you get some bloody-minded judge sitting on X Eve itself, probably having pins stuck into their image by lawyers and court staff, but not this year.  So I’m now free and have spent most of this day crashed out, except for the food run to stock up.  I’m trying not to have to do another one until after the insane time AND the promised heatwave, passes.  Maybe the corner store but that’s it.  People are behaving, once more, as though the end of days is upon us.

I’m not sure why I’m this tired but it seems to have gradually built up over the past several weeks, maybe longer, exacerbated by the stress involving Ernest’s sudden decline last Monday and the rush to the vet.  I’ve also been riding to work most days and even though an e-bike gets called “cheating”  by the lycra brigade, it’s still not nothing to ride one over 20km in a day.  Especially needing to navigate the constantly changing ‘temporary temporary bike paths’  through the building site that used to be Bayswater train station environs/the planned airport train link.

Over the last two days they shut off access to Whatley Crescent completely and an extra chunk of bike path between Bayswater and Meltham, so now we’re on the road with no path markings and signs saying “CYCLISTS IN LANE” which doesn’t actually increase my sense of security.

The city is more crowded also and that includes with bikes.  I nearly had another e-bike smack into me yesterday because the rider didn’t look left before sailing past an intersection.  Dominos Pizza delivery bike.  It wouldn’t have been pretty.  Fortunately my sense of paranoia has saved me so far.

We’re headed for the ultimate heatwave on X Day.  43^C is now predicted, last I looked.  The days preceding and after it are also likely to touch 40^C or get close.  One friend has optimistically invited folks to a picnic and Frisbee event on Boxing Day.  So far she’s the only respondent.

Last entry I’d written I didn’t think it would be that hot;  I think the X day forecast was then in the middle 30s.  Hah.  The universe seems to have taken that as a challenge.

Cowering in the cool is a great plan for Christmas, I recommend it to everyone in Perth because that's what I'm doing!

Very sorry to hear that Ernest has left you --- those little creatures give so much in the time they're around.
