Chengdu wins the Worldcon in 2023

I did not see that coming.  I'd had Winnipeg '23 in mind as a sure thing, considering going to that if I could not get to Chicon next year.

China?

Oh boy.  I've read some of the comments that have begun already on various forums and it is on.  I have to get more information before I say much myself, but I am truly gobsmacked.

I know one thing about Chengdu and that is that it has a panda sanctuary.

I've not seen any of the comments, but I imagine there are going to be some, shall we say, problematic comments,

I'm not surprised, but that is because I've been seeing some details about the number of Chinese members the current worldcon has at the site selection vote level. Trying to remember where I saw it, but my memory said >1000 such.

There are a lot of problematic comments! I guess I'll just watch for awhile and see how things turn out.

Hope you're enjoying your leave! I have a week to go but things are calming down some at work; a sense of it all being too late for any panic so everybody might as well calm down. I have got to get some photos of the office decorations competition. One person has decorated his area in wallpaper that looks like red bricks, with four massive red and white imitation candy canes at four quarters. I think it's a winner, myself. Zalman has been working inside that for a week.

So far, leave has consisted of body going 'and now we go thud'. Am attempting to get some bits and bobs going for the one social event planned for the rest of the year (given that Middlest turns 21 tomorrow, we are attempting to at least recognise that), but other than that would like nothing less that to aestivate.
