My television just exploded....

Ten minutes into the news, I was wandering about, heard a bursting sort of noise and went into the room to see a black screen and smell burning. It's from the tv itself. The power point is fine; I tested it with another appliance and stood back...no problem. The cables haven't been gnawed which is something you always check when you're a rat owner. I thought they might have added a television to their electronic scalps which include two telephones.

Said tv is 16 so most likely out of its warranty... Ack.

Whatcha think? Attempt to repair or upgrade?

It's almost certainly cheaper to buy a new one.

we got an 86Cm TV for about $800.

If you want something smaller than about 48Cm, may I reccommend getting:
a) A HTTV Card for your PC and
b) A 19" LCD.

Best of BOTH worlds!

you haven't seen ratfan's pc, have you? If the magic hamster inside stops running on its wheel, the pc shows an image of a flint and a rock as a warning it needs more electricity.

Oh. Oh dear. :-)

We may have to arrange a "bitsa" upgrade sometime then

I'm almost glad [livejournal.com profile] chaosmanorsaid that as I have no idea what your message meant :-)

I'd love to have all new stuff but I have very limited money! I am a writer. You know what that means ;-) Still, all advice welcome, you never know; I might sell something.

Well I do do repairs and upgrades for "BUCs"
(Basic Unit of Currency: Approx $40 - 1 Bottle of Spirits -or- 1 Slab of Beer -or- 12 RTDs -or- ...)

These days I say to people "What is your Budget?" as I can do upgrades for almost any price including free.

[identity profile] ratfan.livejournal.com 2006-04-28 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I will surely keep that in mind :-) My computer is actually doing fine and it's a nice machine, the only thing is it's about 5 years old, going on 6 and I understand this translates as electronic dinosaur. I don't mind. But if you run a video on it, the movements of the actors put me in mind of the Thunderbirds, just ve-ry slow panic stations.

upgrade. our TV, which is twice the size of yours, cost $200 from Coles.

You never know just...

[identity profile] laura-seabrook.livejournal.com 2006-04-29 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
...what turns up in supermarkets. Jenn bought a small flat screen TV for $199 - easy to look at and can show wide screen stuff. ALDI's (do they have ALDI in W.A.?) often has weird specials including TVs in the middle of their store for under $200.

Trouble is, you can't count on a "special" to turn up when you need one.

[identity profile] buoy-wonder.livejournal.com 2006-04-28 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
It would be cheaper to replace your old one with a similar sized new one.

Also, If there was buring I doubt you could get it repaired at all.

OI! That's for the slight against the honour of my poor PC! Hamster indeed. It's a specially trained team of rats who work in shifts around the clock...

Yeah. Burning smell not good and definitely not the power point; that happened once and everything was black around it.

Coles in the city, was it, Chaos? Maybe I'll go a DVD if I can afford it...

The only things the TV in my house are used for are DVDs and videos. Oh, and the odd doco on ABC.

Special team of rats, is it? I wonder what they think of the cushy digs your ratbabies enjoy...:P

[identity profile] ratfan.livejournal.com 2006-04-29 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I'm strongly inclined now to buy a new one with DVD as there is almost nothing on the box I watch except the ABC news and gardening shows. Plenty of other stuff rattles in the background while I do other things but I don't pay much attention. I also don't want to be caught on the hop when the Powers make the final decision to go digital.

And any rat who lives here enjoys a life of supreme luxury. They get fed breakfast in the mornings and go back to bed. I go to work. Who's the dumb animal now?

New TV, most definitely!

[identity profile] ratfan.livejournal.com 2006-04-29 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's 100 per cent vote for a new television. Makes sense, I guess, with everything about to go digital (in a few years anyway) and I'm not sure you even can attach a DVD to this one.

It's a damn nuisance, though. I'd say it's a bad time to have an expense like that come up but I can't think of a time that would actually be good :-)

How's the USA? You must be working flat tack, which means very very hard; we've hardly heard a thing from you on LJ!

[identity profile] stephen-dedman.livejournal.com 2006-04-29 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely a new TV, especially if you're thinking of getting a DVD player as well. (Sorry we can't offer you the 27-year-old-but-still-in-perfect-working-order TV we replaced last year; after it sat around the house for months, we put it on freecycle.)

Upgrade if you have the $$$.

I bought my old black&white SHARP portable TV in 1997, and my Lemair Colour TV in 1981 - they're both still working (OK, the tape player on the Sharp dies years ago, but the TV and RADIO are fine). Mind you, the colour is slightly faded on the Lemair, so it looks more like those illustrations one sees in 1950s magazines, but it's still watchable.

I'm holding off until TV goes digital, and then I might buy a new TV.

Hi Laura

Yes, definitely unanimous on an upgrade :-) No, we don't have Aldi here; I've seen it mentioned on tv so know what it is. I had some idea they were going to branch out to WA but not yet.

I'm experiencing my first Tv-less night for about 15 years. The news I can catch up with online but I miss the Gardening Australia show. My blooming lot indeed. [for those who don't or can't watch it, "That's your blooming lot" or words to that effect are the presenter's last words of an evening. He tries to find different ways to say it. Apart from those, geez, there's not an awful lot on, is there? No Bab 5, no Firefly, just an ever-increasing rash of "reality shows" that have precious little link with reality that I can see but that's a rant for another day.

Ha ha - I already did a rant on that (http://www.livejournal.com/users/laura_seabrook/120779.html)!
