Demons I get, people are crazy *

Latest read: Joshua Guess's latest zombie book. Unlike many in the field, these are good; decent characterisation, spelling, grammar and plot - all the important stuff. This was Exodus in Black, number five of The Fall series. My main beef with these books is they're too short, around 70,000 words, I think. Still novels, but I can get through one of them in a day if I'm keen and have no social life, which is sometimes the case.

Today's a chilly winter day in Perth [stop laughing, [livejournal.com profile] gillpolack] and I've devoted it mostly to getting the house in order and the laundry done, so I don't run out of underwear and socks, which are also the important stuff. Food shop done also. My pet rats are still asleep but will soon begin demanding dinner to stave off immediate starvation. I've been reading a lot of stuff online, general friends info, and also about Brexit, which seems to be on everyone's minds.

I didn't see that coming, not until the vote was almost counted. Though I was at work and supposedly out of contact doing court transcription, we had one team member working from home and feeding us info via the chat function, supposedly so we could discuss the job. That wasn't the fastest audio transcription I ever did and in fact I had to banish myself from the chat due to inability to focus on both jobs. Our informant is an expat with dual citizenship, and he reckoned Britain was going to become a tiny, isolated country with no friends, or words to that effect, since by that stage the Leave vote had its nose across the line.

I knew basically what the European Union is, but until I looked hadn't been aware that its history dates back to just after WWII, which I guess was a good time for countries to decide it might help if they developed closer links with one another. I admit I have no real idea of how things will change now, except that I'm sure a lot of people are going to be very confused for a long time.

Tomorrow I'll be getting out of the house to meet up with a few friends. One is about to go overseas and has promised not to cry (g). I'm trying to be a bit more proactive with socialising, as I have to do because I live on my own. At the moment the goal is one event (meeting a friend/friends or going to something) once a week. Friends I have tried to socialise with and failed because schedules, I would still like to catch up but I'm worried about being a nuisance if I ask again. My confidence re people actually wanting to see me is not so good.

For instance, I put my details into a friending meme someone ran on one of the Supernatural LJs, but although everyone else there was chatting, no one friended me and I got too worried to push things. So I decided to leave that LJ. There were a lot of photos and gifs, but nobody who actually wanted to chat, far as I can tell. So I will keep looking. And thank you to folk from previous memes who are still with me! I'm now wondering whether I actually want to follow season 12 as closely as I have the previous seasons, and whether I will just wait until Netflix picks it up and not worry if I get spoilered. Basically so long as Crowley, King of Hell, is doing all right, I'm happy :-)

* Subject is, of course, a Supernatural quote, which I also have on a T-shirt

How can I laugh when it's so very warm here. Eight pm and -1...

[identity profile] ratfan.livejournal.com 2016-06-25 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
I only said "chilly," this time, not "freezing," not after the merriment from Canberra AND Finland in that respect.

But how cold is it inside your home? Here, generally only a few degrees above what it is outside. I love my house but it has a lot of gaps. For instance, mice can run freely under the back door.

[identity profile] gillpolack.livejournal.com 2016-06-25 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Gaps here, too. This is why I have my down dressing gown. Alas, however, this season, even with the gown, the chill bites. Even when I'm warm, my body tells me otherwise.

Well, you're sort of entitled at the moment, I'd say. I do hope your recovery is going well. Even when I whinge, I do know I'm fortunate, trust me.

I like stirring you. It's good for me but very unfair on you! Although I think that negative temperatures before bedtime is even close entitle me to whinge.

My heating is a small fan heater and some hot water bottles. It does me okay... Heat/cold is indeed relative. I remember walking through the streets of Tel Aviv on a fine warm November day - around 25' C -in my summer clothes while the locals rugged up. One gentleman stopped me to ask, (In Hebrew), "Aren't you cold?"

As soon as I am better, coffee!

[identity profile] ratfan.livejournal.com 2016-06-25 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely :-) I wondered whether I would have a cold this week, after being greeted by a workmate with, "So you don't have a cold?" and then informed that she and those seated around her did. I assumed I must be next on the list, but in my case, it generally is hay fever.

All I can say is that people who don't friend you are missing out! You are such an awesome and considerate friend, and you post are interesting and personal. I wouldn't want to miss you ever again!!! *hugs*

The Brexit thing: I think your colleague is right: They will be very lonely for a while now, until everything settles down and a legal status is stable again. I so hope they lose Scotland and Northern Ireland, and for good measure why doesn't London take an exit too and compose its own country? LOL

[identity profile] merilune.livejournal.com 2016-06-26 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's difficult to get laundry dry in this weather, isn't it? So frustrating. I'm determined to get up early tomorrow and put my washing out early so it might have a chance to dry outside.

I didn't think Brexit would happen. I still don't fully understand the repercussions and I don't know what to believe as far as what I've seen on TV or read online.

I think I met you on a general friending meme, and I'm still here! I enjoy reading your posts, you are my kind of person. Thoughtful and I can relate to your commentary on life. I do like to read tales of your rats too :)

[identity profile] ratfan.livejournal.com 2016-06-26 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, people :-) I have since heard from one person who explained that the problem may have been my mention of not liking a particular popular "ship" in that fandom. There's apparently a problem with "haters," which I can't get my head around, considering none of the ships are actually canon :-) So if people have encountered that kind of nutter (hater) before, I can kind of understand why they'd be a bit wary.

Oh, and the latest with "Brexit" is that Scotland may legitimately be able to sink it. Watch that space....!

[identity profile] merilune.livejournal.com 2016-06-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I heard something about Scotland not wanting to leave the EU, so I'm not sure if that means that they'll drag the rest of the UK back or they'll do another independence vote. It was pretty close last time, IIRC.

People get so serious about that stuff! A lot of it is all in good fun (which is great!) but the people who get really intense over fandoms, I stay away from them :P I haven't really seen Supernatural, maybe I should give it a go. All I know is that there are two guys and demons. I think Felicia Day is in it too right? Not really a fan, but I can look past that!

[identity profile] sue-bursztynski.livejournal.com 2016-06-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
We've both been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, especially in Trek and B7 fandom, eh? Only those were the days before the Internet made it easy to bash each other on-line. Hey, it's a TV SHOW! Just a bloody TV show! Some people need to get a life. Really.

The weird thing is, a lot of my students at Sunshine College write and read fan fiction and know that a "ship" isn't just something to go on cruises on. And when I was heavily involved, we fans were a minority.

I'm old enough to remember when Britain decided to join what was then the European Commin Market. As far as I understood, it meant Australian trade was left out in the cold. A British friend told me, "We don't owe you anything!"

It has been so COLD here the last few days!!! ARGH!! We have no aircon so i have just been putting on a zillion layers.

I think SPN is better when it is binge watched, however there is no way i could wait to do that, it would kill me!
So i will be recording each ep as always. CANNOT WAIT!!!

I am rewatching SPN in the hiatus on netflix, even though i own the DVD's and it is so GOOD when watched one after the other.
I am in S3 now. (babieees)

Yeah, the friending thing can be hard, i didn't even get a chance to look at any of the meme's. ((hugs))
