The package of books I mailed to myself the day before leaving the USA arrived yesterday. So 16 days, not bad. All the books are fine. The roughest handling they got was probably me dropping the box off the back of the bike because I hadn't secured it properly yet. This includes the pocket program book for LonestarCon 3; the crucial item one needed to carry during the con. Not that I got to much on the first day; this was a jetlag wind down day. After things kicked off at noon, one had a choice of a dozen events to attend at any time, which was almost too much for my jetlagged brain.
I began with the evening concerts featuring Seanan McGuire and Dead Sexy, which included some songs I have got to find on CD. I encountered Seanan by her penname Mira Grant and the postapocalypse series beginning with Feed. Feed was the first zombie book I ever read and it started me on reading lots, lots more. Seanan seemed really pleased when I told her that later in the con. :-) Filk singing is where she started out. They didn't seem to be selling CDs at the Worldcon, and I did look. I'm haunted by Seanan's song (I believe it is hers) called Wicked Girls, which is about various girl characters in fantasy and sf and how they are dealt with by fate. Not kindly:
Dorothy, Alice and Wendy and Jane,
Susan and Lucy, we’re calling your names,
All the Lost Girls who came out of the rain
And chose to go back on the shelf.
Tinker Bell says, and I find I agree
You have to break rules if you want to break free.
So do as you like — we’re determined to be
Wicked girls saving ourselves.
Next was Leslie Fish, whom I remember hearing at Aussiecon 2 back in 1985, which kind of dates both of us. All her material was new to me, so I am way behind there also. I have also never seen anyone lubricate themselves and their guitar with whisky onstage but hey, whatever works. I remember fading out not long after the end of Leslie's concert and thus missing Captains of the Chess Team and their immortal hits such as Bittorrent of Love and Smells Like Godzilla. I wish I could have been awake all the time.
