The weather bureau's fashion sense

There's two new colours on the weather maps to indicate higher temperatures. Purple and black. Two of my favourites, though I rather wish they didn't have to be there. I hope everyone in the eastern states is ok. I hope we're ok. Is it me or is this summer harder to take than usual?
People ask me what I've been doing (you don't count, Facebook, that's just creepy) and I can never think of anything creditable. I might mention I have been doing some writing when weather permits and certainly some thinking. leecetheartist and I went to the city on Monday in the mistaken belief that the morning rain would cool things down. Instead, it caused humidity to rocket to 90% and the temperature to around 37/38^C. We managed to visit Tactics (gaming shop) and also Stefen's Books before L went to donate blood and I staggered off home to the air-conditioning to get started on Justin Cronin's The Twelve which followed me out of the bookshop. This necessitated a speed-read through the first book, The Passage due to its length, complexity and the considerable time since I'd read it the first time.
It's the first book of the year, apart from e-books. Last year I managed to read 85 books, 40 by women and 45 by men, not counting rereads. I've done better but those have been times when I was unemployed!
I'm looking forward to Genghiscon on Friday, where I hope to catch up with various people, before I'm once again shackled to the desk at the gulag next Monday!
