I just posted the following to Facebook:
You know how Facebook always asks what's on your mind; as though it wants to know? This is on mine and has been for a long time. I don't actually like my name much, so I want to start using my middle name where I can. This shortens to Alex. I apologise for any confusion, but I figure most people don't see me in face-to-face anyway and those who do, well, it's usually for gaming and I'll answer to a variety of things except late for food.
What this means is that if people want to call me Sue still or forget or whatever, it's not a problem. I don't expect I can change it for writing yet but I'll worry about that later. This is mostly for my online presence at the moment.
Names are important things, of course, but when I started thinking about mine, I thought about how we all have different names to different people. My mother is Mum to me, Mrs Last Name to others, First Name to the rest; it all depends who they are in relation to her. This is the same for all of us and we manage to adjust without even thinking about it.
I found this scary to say. I don't like attracting attention. I am the original "I'm not here" person on the train. So, back in my box now.
