Plant Raid Flunked
May. 29th, 2011 11:57 amI meant to get some plants today. The local council runs a periodic plant sale to residents, 50c a plant. 9am to 11am at the Sunday market. I got there just past 9 and they were ALL GONE! Big crowd, somebody told me. It sort of helped that they were too late as well and they'd got there before 9. I totally miscalculated the enthusiasm of the locals. I had all the bare spots in my yard noted down, with how much sun/shade each area had.
Looks like I'll have to go to a plant nursery and do this the standard way. Since the big umbrella tree died, I've got an unsightly bare area in the front yard and a couple more in the back. I've actually lost several trees over the past two, three years, including my lemon tree, which I tried hard to save. I believe the water level has gone down, probably not helped by the introduction of my "pot plant," a young eucalypt (1ft high or so) which I brought with me when I moved in and set free in the back yard. It's now about 40-50 feet, guessing by how much taller than the house it is now.
I have a feeling that nothing *but* a native tree or shrub is going to make it, so I plan to get whichever ones the local birds like most and hope they survive. The successful trees in my yard include the lemon scented gum, which is HUGE and doing very well. I just swept up after it, actually, this is Flower Season, to be followed by Branch Season, Leaf Season and Bark Season. Or, if we get a storm, all the above. I've got several peppermint gums, which enthusiastically propagate themselves and at least six bottlebrushes, but more would be nice.
