I've just lost my boy Oliver, shown here in his adolescent prime. He'd been slowing down for some time and this morning settled down in his hammock and went to sleep.
Yes. We've actually done okay for a few months, considering several of my rats are middle-aged to elderly. He'll stay there in the hammock until this evening, so that Magnus and Vernon know what happened, and then I'll have to bury him.
Oliver has been my rat for a long time. He and his two brothers came to live here when they were only little, maybe six weeks, surrendered by a backyard breeder. Now Magnus is the only one left of that group, but he has Vernon for company. I moved Vern to live with the two old guys after realising he was being bullied by Elliott.
Thanks. I've just realised how clean Oliver's tail is in that picture. In later life, I'm afraid he never washed it, so I had to. He is beautiful, isn't he? They're called silver fawn because if you ruffle the ginger, underneath it's a much paler colour.
I'm hoping Magnus will be all right. He will be missing Oliver. So will Vernon, of course, but I don't think Vern was as close and he's younger.

At least he went quietly and softly.
