Geek's Weekend
Another hot Saturday night. Even my five pet rats have voluntarily gone home and crashed out. I'm reasonably ok with it being quiet, though slightly disturbed that I just managed to watch an entire Adam Sandler movie, Fifty First Dates and quite enjoy it.
The movie did remind me I haven't been anywhere since my trip to the USA last July/August - not really so long! - but it'll probably be another year to recoup funds and then the trip in sights is to Melbourne for the fourth Australian Worldcon. Not doing anything that involves changing funds into US currency is probably a good move. I only just got home ahead of the big crash. While I was there the dollar almost achieved parity with the US greenback. Won't see that again for awhile. I'd like to go back to the States some time, certainly, but have been toying with the radical notion of not doing so around a con. Besides, looks like the 2011 Worldcon is likely to be in Reno. Hey,
ankh_hpl, still want to do that trip to New Mexico?

stephen_dedman's post about Stone Age communications vis-a-vis Time Travel GURPS has made me extremely nostalgic for our old Saturday night games! In lieu of actual travel, gaming is a great virtual adventure. "So what did you do on the weekend? Oh, my friends and I were shut in a dungeon by an mad scientist in our underwear!" "Get a life, geek..."
In real life, I don't think I've mentioned to my workmates yet that I game. They're extremely normal. They do know that I've signed up to be an extra in a zombie movie that's to be made here on my local turf, because I read about it in the paper at work. I'll try to get pictures. The producer says he's now got about 200 zombies, including his friends and family. And no, I don't know if they're all locals; this suburb isn't quite that bad.

BTW, gaming isn't just a substitute for travel. It can be a considerable improvement . . . nobody has ever gotten the Cairo Gyro from rolling dice for 12 hours straight.

You're safe from being dragged to Reno. I got a look at it when riding a bus through it to the train station and general impression was of tackiness and a LOT of casinos and signs relating to gambling. Like I said, if I come to the US that year, I probably won't go to the Worldcon, which would save me about $1500, I think, considering membership, room costs and eating over-priced food.
The Denver Mexican food was pretty damn good, I tell you, in comparison with anything I can get here. I still remember that waitress with her bandolier as part of the uniform :-)
