Terror Below and other entertainments
I'm not going to make resolutions about posting because that's not going to happen, but I am going to try to do some short(er) posts about things I've been meaning to talk about. Like Tremors. Here are my notes behind a cut because I seem not to know what "short post" means.
Over New Year’s I watched Tremors. World’s best monster film! I was inspired after playing the game Terror Below, based on the movie, during Brocon on 29 December. Brocon, for new people, is a sort of private boardgaming gathering we have at the home of Bronny and Tim, hence the name. This was the main game I got to play apart from Ticket to Ride. After I re-watched the movie, which I haven't seen since it was new, I realised what a great tribute the game is. The little car tokens you move about the board are copies of the actual cars you see in the movie! Earl and Val's blue truck, the car which gets buried by the giant worms and others. Not the Cat, which I found a bit disappointing. The game does feature 18 wheeler trucks which roll over everything, so perhaps they are meant to represent the Cat. You can drive straight over other vehicles in your efforts to locate and destroy the worms, while gathering the precious eggs to turn over for research.
I see there's a whole series of Tremors films so am thinking of watching them all or as many as I can take, while I'm on holiday this month. I'm under no illusion that they are actually quality, but I'm hoping that some at least will feature Fred Ward. In the '90s, in the long ago days of frequent borrowing from video stores, my housemate and I would often end up with movies featuring Fred Ward, without actually trying. So we decided we were the last members of the Fred Ward Appreciation Society, like the Cutters on Red Dwarf, the last members of the John Wayne Fan Club.
The characters really make the movie Tremors. Everyone has a role to play, everyone is a distinct character - the proprietor of the one store in the town of Perfection, Nevada, the survivalists with the biggest gun collection outside of NRA Headquarters, the two laid back souls, Earl and Val, who settle any dispute with a round of Paper, Rock, Scissors and so on. I did barrack for the annoying teenager to be eaten by worms. I thought he deserved it for trying to freak the characters out so often, Peter and the Wolf style. After that, I started watching bits and pieces of Netflix's new offerings in the hope of finding something bingeworthy.
I've stopped on one show, Messiah, about someone who may be the Second Coming of Jesus….or the best con man ever born. It’s disturbing and strangely addictive. This new Messiah is an Iranian, whose first followers were Shiite Muslim refugees from Syria whom he led into the desert to the border of Israel where they languished, forbidden to enter, while the Messiah took off to America to seek more followers there. That’s where things started to look a bit dodgy and the CIA took an interest. That's as far as I've got and I've tried not to be spoilery but to put enough detail to give an idea of what the show is.
