Swancon Saturday
I just got home from the con and about to have only my second mug of tea today. I did get some coffee about halfway through. Today was more organised in that I had the panel to do, this panel -
Magical and SF Detective Fiction: Police Procedurals and similar in non mainstream settings. - Saturday 12:00 until Saturday 13:00 with: Sally Beasley, Stephen Dedman, Leece Smith
- and a room gathering to attend. I'm feeling rather tired now and though I seem to have chatted to a lot of people, I haven't really been able to hang with anybody for long today, so feel a bit down and isolated.
First off I played Halfling Heist, a card/boardgame where one walks into a tavern where a brawl is in progress. The idea is to steal as much food as one can and get out without being caught by the City Watch. This comes surprisingly naturally. My mind was a bit distracted because the panel was right after that. We had an actual audience who wanted to ask questions. Unfortunately for me, my first question really rattled me as it was somewhat critical and I was already nervous, so once I had done my best to address that, I had forgotten where I was. I'm now kicking myself because I didn't get out the most important points I wanted to say. I had them written down but the moderator directed me away from discussing that series and then someone else was talking. I think that was the order of events. Four people in an hour panel doesn't give you very long even if you are able to share time equally. My focus series were the In Death books by J.D. Robb and the Lupi series by Eileen Wilks. I love these books and wish I could have promoted them better.
I'm going to use my notes to do a proper post about what I wanted to say, here and also on Google Plus. Then I don't think I will let anyone persuade me on to a panel again, because I'm quite despondent about how bad I am at talking to an audience.
After that I went to Jack's gender variant gathering. I'd call it that rather than a party because there were about eight people discussing life for the gender variant. Unisex toilet facilities and the frequent lack thereof is what stands out in my mind.
Then there was the five-minute launch for the next convention and I have the list of guests here: Fan guest is Fe Waters, who generally runs the family program and expressed some nervousness about stepping outside that room! Australian GOH is Gillian Rubinstein, whom I know as Lian Hearn (The Otori series) about a magical medieval Japan. Overseas GOH is Jane Espenson, mostly known as a TV writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Warehouse 13 and Once Upon a Time.
I was audience for the demonstration of UggTech! and after that headed home.
I'm not sure about whether to show up tomorrow so if anyone would like to meet up, maybe let me know?
