1. The election results tonight are so exciting! Mamdani! And so much good news out of Virginia! Polls here don't close for another half hour, but I am cautiously optimistic about Prop 50. Of course Republicans are already saying everything's rigged, but that's what being a Republican means these days.

2. We had a nice lunch today at Disneyland. We didn't go on the weekend since I still was feeling under the weather, but I didn't have anything scheduled this morning, just a meeting in the afternoon, so I was able to make good use of that flexibility.

3. Carla took her Switch and some games to Book Off today while we were down in Gardena and got $250 for the lot. Her Switch was an Animal Crossing one (doesn't come with the game or anything, but the design is super cute) and she still had the original box, so I was pretty sure they'd give a decent price for it. I think that was about $150 and another $100 for the games. She'd call the night before to make sure that location was buying systems as some of them don't, and they said yes, and that they had a promotion right now for Switch games where you get an extra 20% over their usual buying price, so we went through our games and found some we don't think we'll play again.

4. Chloe's celebrating election victories!

2025 Disneyland Trip #70 (11/4/25)

We had originally planned to go to Disneyland for dinner (with Carla coming down to work with me and doing shopping etc. while I had meetings for a few hours), but as I was thinking about it, I realized we could go to Disneyland first for lunch and then go to work for my meetings and just come home and relax in the evening, so that's what we did!

Lay long talking pleasantly with my wife in bed, it having rained, and do still, very much all night long. Up and to the office, where we sat till noon. This morning we had news by letters that Sir Richard Stayner is dead at sea in the Mary, which is now come into Portsmouth from Lisbon; which we are sorry for, he being a very stout seaman. But there will be no great miss of him for all that. Dined at home with my wife, and all the afternoon among my workmen, and at night to my office to do business there, and then to see Sir W. Pen, who is still sick, but his pain less than it was. He took occasion to talk with me about Sir J. Minnes’s intention to divide the entry and the yard, and so to keep him out of the yard, and forcing him to go through the garden to his house. Which he is vexed at, and I am glad to see that Sir J. Minnes do use him just as he do me, and so I perceive it is not anything extraordinary his carriage to me in the matter of our houses, for this is worse than anything he has done to me, that he should give order for the stopping up of his way to his house without so much as advising with him or letting of him know it, and I confess that it is very highly and basely done of him. So to my office again, and after doing business there, then home to supper and to bed.

Life lived in dot points

  • I submitted my preliminary candidacy proposal today. I still have to present it, get reviewer's feedback, and resubmit, but it is one hoop closer to done.
  • I received confirmation that my application to work with a larger project has been accepted. I have until Monday to tell them what my milestones, deliverables, and KPIs are, and while the first two are okay, the last one is supposed to have at least one from a list I can't find
  • I caved and bought an ebook bundle from StoryBundle: this trilogies bundle - I bought it for the Natania Barron (which I acquired book one while travelling, and then lost when I was 1/3 in) and the Jane Yolen (I believe I know where book 1 is, but I didn't know it was a trilogy). I have no expectations for the rest, but it was cheaper than trying to buy either of the trilogies (definitely in hard copy, but possibly still cheaper than them in softcopy, with the cost of ebooks)
  • I was running ahead on the quilting, I then did none in the weekend just gone, so I think I'm a block behind, but I've also done some of the assembling, so I've worked ahead as well. progress is progress
  • the little chamber orchestra has a performance on Sunday, and Youngest (who has not been able to attend a rehearsal all semester due to uni scheduling conflicts) came along and can play at least some of it, which helps bolster the currently light on cello section (we have a new cello player. This was their fourth session with us; I'm not sure they had met any of the other cello players before last night).
  • I have managed to lose the blanket that lives on the red couch. I have zero memory of it ever being anywhere else, so I'm a bit :( about it. But I used it as the reference object for a course I'm doing (I'm doing two tiny courses, on the future of data and the future of communication, each ~10 hours, while attempting to do a stack of other things. As is the way, I'm too slow moving for it to be only 10 hours, given that I spent nearly two this afternoon doing 1/6 of the work)

Daily Happiness

1. I worked from home in the morning but did go in to work in the afternoon for a meeting. I'm feeling mostly all better but do have a bit of a lingering cough still.

2. Instagram seems to have finally fixed the issue where it was saving copies of photos I post on my phone, even if I had the settings checked so it was not supposed to do that. It was fine for years and then a few months ago just started randomly saving the photos, meaning I have to remember to delete them off my phone every time or end up with dupes of everything I post there. Googling only got me instructions to turn off the setting related to that, which was already off. I tried turning it on and off again, logging out of my account, etc. to no avail, so I just decided to live with it and the annoyance of deleting the photos, for the convenience of Instagram crossposting to facebook, though it was very tempting to just abandon my Instagram account altogether. Anyway, a few days ago it just as randomly stopped saving photos. Fingers crossed it doesn't break again, or this time I really might just give up on it, since I don't really use it much other than for posting my daily cats.

3. And with that, a daily cat:

Up and with Sir J. Minnes in his coach to White Hall, to the Duke’s; but found him gone out a-hunting. Thence to my Lord Sandwich, from whom I receive every day more and more signs of his confidence and esteem of me. Here I met with Pierce the chyrurgeon, who tells me that my Lady Castlemaine is with child; but though it be the King’s, yet her Lord being still in town, and sometimes seeing of her, though never to eat or lie together, it will be laid to him. He tells me also how the Duke of York is smitten in love with my Lady Chesterfield (a virtuous lady, daughter to my Lord of Ormond); and so much, that the duchess of York hath complained to the King and her father about it, and my Lady Chesterfield is gone into the country for it. At all which I am sorry; but it is the effect of idleness, and having nothing else to employ their great spirits upon. Thence with Mr. Creede and Mr. Moore (who is got upon his legs and come to see my Lord) to Wilkinson’s, and there I did give them and Mr. Howe their dinner of roast beef, cost me 5s., and after dinner carried Mr. Moore as far as Paul’s in a coach, giving him direction about my law business, and there set him down, and I home and among my workmen, who happened of all sorts to meet to their making an end of a great many jobbs, so that after to-morrow I shall have but a little plastering and all the painting almost to do, which was good content to me. At night to my office, and did business; and there came to me Mr. Wade and Evett, who have been again with their prime intelligencer, a woman, I perceive: and though we have missed twice, yet they bring such an account of the probability of the truth of the thing, though we are not certain of the place, that we shall set upon it once more; and I am willing and hopefull in it. So we resolved to set upon it again on Wednesday morning; and the woman herself will be there in a disguise, and confirm us in the place. So they took leave for the night, and I to my business, and then home to my wife and to supper and bed, my pain being going away. So by God’s great blessing my mind is in good condition of quiet.

(Lord’s day). Lay long with pleasure talking with my wife, in whom I never had greater content, blessed be God! than now, she continuing with the same care and thrift and innocence, so long as I keep her from occasions of being otherwise, as ever she was in her life, and keeps the house as well.

To church, where Mr. Mills, after he had read the service, and shifted himself as he did the last day, preached a very ordinary sermon. So home to dinner with my wife. Then up into my new rooms which are, almost finished, and there walked with great content talking with my wife till church time, and then to church, and there being a lazy preacher I slept out the sermon, and so home, and after visiting the two Sir Williams, who are both of them mending apace, I to my office preparing things against to-morrow for the Duke, and so home and to bed, with some pain, … [in making water – L&M] having taken cold this morning in sitting too long bare-legged to pare my corns.

My wife and I spent a good deal of this evening in reading “Du Bartas’ Imposture” and other parts which my wife of late has taken up to read, and is very fine as anything I meet with.

Daily Happiness

1. Still a little sniffly and coughing, but mostly over the cold. Tested again today and still negative. I have a meeting tomorrow that can't be done online, so I was going to just bow out if I was still sick, but I think I'll be in good enough shape to go.

2. I got the last of my mom's/her husband's stuff moved from the shed with our stuff to the shed with my step-sister's stuff, so now I can work on rearranging the stuff in our shed so it's more easily accessible. I got another set of wire rack shelves this past week and put them up today, and will probably end up getting one or two more. I'm not making it a big project, just a repeating weekly task on my to-do list, so every weekend I can get a little done here and there. I'm looking forward to having it more organized.

3. We bought a Christmas tree today! Now that we have a cat free zone in the garage, we can have a tree up again, but the tree we had before was super old (had actually been one my mom bought when I was in my teens and she got tired of getting live trees every year, so it's probably 35 years old at this point) and we put it out on the curb last year when we were cleaning everything out of the garage before the remodel. We checked out Walmart last week, but all they had were pre-lit trees and I do not want one, because you're stuck with unremoveable lights when they die, and having to string new ones over them, or throwing the tree out and buying a new one. Today at Target we managed to find one tree without lights on it, and it's a nice looking one. Taller than I was anticipating buying at 7.5 feet, but the garage has a high ceiling, so it will look nice (just means I have to get the step stool out for decorating). Haven't set it up yet, but looking forward to doing that soon.

5. Tuxie loves spending a few hours under this tree in the morning after breakfast.

🍂 November Goals 🍂

October slipped past in a blur, but November feels like a month for gentle structure — reading because it’s comforting, writing because it helps me breathe, and trying not to treat either as a chore.

📚 Reading Goals

Finish at least 3 books
Keep reading a little most days, even just a few pages
Maybe (finally!) finish The Ministry of Time
Prioritise fun and curiosity over guilt - reading doesn’t have to be productive to be worthwhile
Share a few more updates, even the messy or half-formed ones. That’s part of the story too.

✍️ Writing & Fandom Goals

Update Surface Tension
Update Wolf-Tethered - and try to figure out what story it’s actually trying to be!
Update You Wouldn’t Take My Word for It If You Knew Who Was Talking
Write some Sincaraz - whatever shape it wants to take
Write more Darren/Jannik kink (because it’s always fun)
Maybe write some more Team Sinner Polycule fic
Keep sharing, even if it’s just a snippet or a ramble - words in the wild count

🌿 Life Goals

Keep doing physio for shoulder, hip, and knee - consistency over perfection
Have at least one proper rest day with no guilt
Cook something comforting, ideally involving butter or cinnamon
Go outside on at least one clear, cold morning - just to breathe
Keep organising clothes storage a little at a time — it doesn’t need to be perfect, just better
Get back to daily gratitudes
Keep using Finch - it’s been helping, and that’s worth keeping up
Try one small thing that makes life feel softer

November doesn’t need to be wildly productive; it just needs to feel a little steadier, a little kinder. Here’s to slow progress, good food, and stories that won’t leave us alone. 💛

Epithets - the good, the bad, and the ugly

Epithets! Phrases used to describe someone, rather than using their name, like "the tall man", "her girlfriend", "his lover". In general, the advice is to avoid them, and if I hit a story with a ton of epithets (often an older one from the earlier days of fandom) it does make me wince to read them.

I've seen some good explanations about how to use, and how to avoid, epithets, and this recent tumblr post by starpains about epithets in tight 3rd person is useful, as it explains why epithets are often jarring for the reader, especially in tight 3rd person POV. It's because we're supposed to be inside the POV character's head, so the writing needs to depict what they're thinking. And hopefully very few people go about thinking of their significant others like this: "she felt a flood of affection for her partner". No, they think: "she felt a flood of affection for Tony".

Writers may use epithets as they worry about the frequent use of a name, in the way that we generally try not to repeat words too much, but the advice is that readers don't notice names even if they're used repeatedly. I agree - I don't find repeated names jarring in the way that inappropriate epithets are. Again, it all comes down to how the POV character thinks. They'll be repeatedly thinking of the person's name, so it feels natural when written that way. For example:

"John watched Rodney pace to and fro. Rodney's hair was sticking straight up where he'd run his hands through it in frustration. Finally, Rodney stopped dead and turned back to John."

rather than

"John watched his lover pace to and fro. The other man's hair was sticking straight up where he'd run his hands through it in frustration. Finally, his friend stopped dead and turned back to John." John simply wouldn't think about Rodney like that.

Of course there are some places where the use of epithets is what's needed. If your POV character doesn't know the other person's name, or not well enough to think of them using their name, then an epithet works.

"The strangers stood threateningly in the roadway. John singled out the tall, scarred man who seemed to be their leader." John doesn't know his name so doesn't think of him with a name.

or

"The butler announced Brandon Fenwick, the new Canadian ambassador. Fraser took the ambassador's coat and ushered him into the reception room." Fraser is aware of Fenwick's name, but doesn't feel himself on equal terms, so thinks of the ambassador deferentially by his title (epithet) rather than as "Brandon Fenwick" or as "Fenwick". However, if the scene turned into a siege with Fraser and Fenwick trapped in the consulate, fighting side by side, Fraser would after a while start thinking of him as "Fenwick" (probably after Fenwick exasperatedly told him to use his actual name), and eventually as "Brandon" (when Fenwick had been shot and Fraser was bandaging his wound and reassuring him).

So epithets can be used, like names, to show degrees of intimacy. I run into this quite a bit as my main fandom has a military contingent, and the convention is to use titles in formal settings, surnames in most professional settings, and first names only if the two people are actually friends, lovers, or intimate e.g. as in the example above, if wounded and being tended. And as starpains describes, you can use epithets to deliberately distance your POV character from someone else - as long as it makes sense that that's how they'd think of them. I also once had fun with the vagaries of the Stargate translation function, imagining a situation where only the use of epithets was possible.

Interestingly, the other reason to use an epithet is in very intimate relationships where the role is all important. There have been fashions in the use of names vs epithets/titles for parents across the years, but mostly the role is so important that we think of our parents by their role, not their name. "John sat on his mother's bed, trying not to see how thin and frail she was." He knows her name is Catherine but he never thinks of her as "Catherine", just as "my mother" or "Mom". In the sixties and later, parents sometimes got their kids to use their first names, maybe in a gesture of egalitarianism to get away from "patriarchal roles". It creates an intimacy and informality in the way a child addresses their parent which may feel jarring, transgressive, or "right on", depending on your attitudes. What matters is the attitudes of your characters, of course. They might find it entirely natural, or also be uncomfortable with it. In The Sentinel, Blair's rather feckless mother taught him as a child to use her name, which he still does, partly as she remains somewhat immature and he was parentified as a kid. So the use of names vs epithets can convey subtleties of meaning in close relationships. Like the formality of a boy calling his father "sir" and thinking of him as "my father", rather than "Dad", can show a distant relationship, especially if set in modern times.

How about you? How do you use epithets vs names in your writing, especially in tight 3rd POV?

Daily Happiness

1. Still not covid. I'll test one more time tomorrow, but I think if it's not showing anything after four days I can safely say it's a cold. Still feeling pretty good overall.

2. The farmers market had spicy watermelon fruit leather! Just one package and it was smaller than usual, but they had it. I thought it was totally gone for the season but I guess they had a little bit of watermelon left.

3. It's feeling properly like fall today. Very overcast and chilly all day. This can continue!

4. I love how pensive Molly looks. Contemplating life while enjoying the sun.

Saturday 1 November 1662

Up and after a little while with my workmen I went to my office, and then to our sitting all the morning. At noon with Mr. Creede, whom I found at my house, to the Trinity House, to a great dinner there, by invitacion, and much company. It seems one Captain Evans makes his Elder Brother’s dinner to-day. Among other discourses one Mr. Oudant, secretary to the late Princesse of Orange, did discourse of the convenience as to keeping the highways from being deep, by their horses, in Holland (and Flanders where the ground is as miry as ours is), going in their carts and, waggons as ours in coaches, wishing the same here as an expedient to make the ways better, and I think there is something in it, where there is breadth enough.

Thence to my office, sent for to meet Mr. Leigh again; from Sir H. Bennet. And he and I, with Wade and his intelligencer and labourers, to the Tower cellars, to make one tryall more; where we staid two or three hours digging, and dug a great deal all under the arches, as it was now most confidently directed, and so seriously, and upon pretended good grounds, that I myself did truly expect to speed; but we missed of all: and so we went away the second time like fools. And to our office, whither, a coach being come, Mr. Leigh goes home to Whitehall; and I by appointment to the Dolphin Tavern, to meet Wade and the other, Captn. Evett, who now do tell me plainly, that he that do put him upon this is one that had it from Barkestead’s own mouth, and was advised with by him, just before the King’s coming in, how to get it out, and had all the signs told him how and where it lay, and had always been the great confident of Barkestead even to the trusting him with his life and all he had. So that he did much convince me that there is good ground for what we go about. But I fear it may be that he did find some conveyance of it away, without the help of this man, before he died. But he is resolved to go to the party once more, and then to determine what we shall do further. So we parted, and I to my office, where after sending away my letters to the post I do hear that Sir J. Minnes is resolved to turn part of our entry into a room and to divide the back yard between Sir W. Pen and him, which though I do not see how it will annoy me much particularly, yet it do trouble me a little for fear it should, but I do not see how it can well unless in his desiring my coming to my back stairs, but for that I shall do as well as himself or Sir W. Pen, who is most concerned to look after it.

📚 October Reading Wrap-Up

October was… a lot. Between uni starting (!!!), work chaos, and a migraine that just would not quit, reading was more of a background hum than a main feature. But hey - two books finished is progress, and I’ll take that as a win.

📖 What I Read
The Last Olympian – Rick Riordan ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A satisfying end to the Percy Jackson series! I enjoyed the scale of it, even if it didn’t hit quite as hard as some of the earlier books for me.
The Kiss Curse – Erin Sterling ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Cozy witchy romance with autumnal vibes - perfect for spooky season reading, even if I read most of it under a blanket trying to ignore my migraine.

☕ What I Didn’t Read (But Still Counts)

I made progress on several ongoing reads, even if I didn’t actually finish them. And honestly, that’s kind of the mood for October - slow, steady, distracted by tutorials and caffeine.

I also managed to start three new books this month - because apparently my brain’s motto is “finish? never heard of her.” So despite finishing two, I somehow ended up with more books on my “currently reading” shelf than I started October with. Classic me.

Still, it’s progress. The list may have grown, but so did the stories I’m excited to return to.

🧠 Life Lately

Uni starting has been both exciting and overwhelming - lots of new routines, brain fog, and figuring out where reading fits into my days again. Work’s been full-on too, so I’m trying to be kind to myself about the pace of everything.

Also: I did read a lot of fic (and wrote a fair bit too), so the stories are still happening - just not always in book form!

🌟 November Reading Goals

Let’s try again, but gently.
  • Finish at least 3 books
  • Keep reading a little most days
  • Maybe finally finish The Ministry of Time
  • Prioritise fun and curiosity over guilt
  • Share a few more updates - even the messy ones
✨ Because even if it’s slow, it still counts.
And hey - if all else fails, there’s always fanfic and hot chocolate. ☕💛

Mission 116 Update for October 2025 (Month 18)

Although there has been and still is a LOT going on, not so much of it is measurable via this list.

25. Follow an elimination diet for 60 to 90 days
So far this has been a bit of a fail, mostly due to stress and health issues. And weather. I am such a comfort food eater when the weather gets colder. This does not mean I have given up on this goal, merely that it has been delayed.

28. Weight monitoring
I haven’t weighed myself lately but think it unlikely that I am continuing to lose weight.

29. BMI monitoring
Again, since I’ve not weighed myself for a while I can’t calculate BMI either.

53. Fix exterior spotlights
The front corner one remains incomplete. The old fixture is gone, I have purchased the new one and new bulbs, but getting the handyman to show up and do this five minute chore seems really difficult.

79. Declutter basement
Handyman Steve came by and took another truckload of discards to the dump and I am delighted to have it all gone. A few more things do remain, aside from the things I will leave for the new owners, but the basement is impressively empty these days.

96. Prepare a list of necessary selling/moving tasks and a schedule for them
At this point the list for selling the house is done and I have a five week spreadsheet schedule prepared for moving! There may be some issues that turn up post-inspection – the expectation is that my realtor will be able to negotiate any of those as price adjustments rather than my actually having to do the repairs.

99. Dispose of unwanted items
Not as big a decluttering month as September was, but very satisfying. I was so happy to get rid of a lot of bottled products for cleaning, pet accidents and the like. It felt really good to get rid of various toxic type stuff properly and safely disposed of - even if I did have to drive 200 miles in the rain to do so!

101. Settle on date to list house
I did sign with a local realtor. Our plan was to spend a week making the last touches and then the house would officially go on the market today, November 1st. Well, word got around quickly and after four showings last Friday, I received a purchase offer a week ago today. The inspection was done on Thursday and I am still waiting on the results.

103. Reserve a POD for moving
The way things are working out, I will be able to stick with my December 2 date for the POD delivery.

104. Hire a crew to help me finish packing and load up the Pod
Hired a crew to do the loading on December 3 and the kiddo is planning to fly in on either the 4th or 5th and hopefully we will be on the road by that weekend. The buyers have generously offered to let me stay in the house until mid-month as their moving date is flexible, but I don’t want to overstay that generosity.

107. Prepare a folder of needed info for new owners
I have a drawer full of manuals, instructions and various miscellaneous material that I hope the buyers will find helpful.

Now I am beginning to wonder just what November and December’s lists will look like!

In which there is a challenge

It's the first of November which means it's writing season. I'm not doing any official challenge as such this year. I've set myself a target of 15,000 words for the month, so it's just a small challenge. I'm hoping that will be enough to finish off my novel-in-progress. I can't believe I'm actually getting close to the end of it!

Who else is doing a writing challenge this month? What's your target and what will you be writing?

Daily Happiness

1. Still not covid. Fingers crossed it stays that way. My symptoms seem to have skipped the sinus stage and just went directly from sore throat to chest congestion, which is similar to a cold I had last year. I don't love chest congestion (always a bit worried something will lurk in there and turn into bronchitis or pneumonia) but I really hate being stuffed up, so I'm happy to not be right now. I feel fine otherwise, a little tired. Worked from home again today, though aside from a meeting this morning and answering some emails and messages, I didn't really do a lot of actual work.

2. The heat spell is over and it was very pleasant today. We took a midday walk and though the sun was bright, it wasn't too hot. A little breezy. Very nice weather for a walk.

3. We have been doing this Star Wars Halloween countdown calendar we got from Disneyland and the figures are so cute! Next year we can just put them up as decorations from the beginning, but it was fun to open one each day, ending on the 31st (there are thirteen total because spooky).

We kept them on what's left of the mantel lol (just a narrow ridge of bricks since we removed the wood). I wouldn't want to put anything delicate up there, breakable or legos or such, but these are sturdy plastic figures so even if the cats had knocked them down, they wouldn't be damaged, but no one touched them.

And a closeup:

4. I love how this yawn looks like he's frantically trying to warn someone about something.

Weekly Reading

Recently Finished
Breathless Homicidal Slime Mutants: The Art of the Paperback
Found this in a neighborhood Little Library. Not much text, so it's a fast read. Mostly just pictures of old paperback book covers. It was fun to look at as something I got for free. Wouldn't buy it, though.

We Live Here Now
A woman and her husband move to an isolated old house after she's released from the hospital following a nearly fatal accident. From the beginning, there are strange goings on, but while the MC thinks the house might be haunted, her husband is convinced she's just hallucinating as a symptom of her post-sepsis syndrome. Spoiler alert: it's haunted. I think this was one of the most interesting haunted house stories I've read and I really liked the twists.

The Killings at Badger's Drift
First novel in the series the Midsomer Murders show is based on. I don't usually go for mysteries with male protags, especially policemen, but this was on a two-for-one Audible sale and I've heard go things about the show, so I decided to check it out. I like the MC all right and the mystery was interesting. Did not like that the stereotypes regarding the lone gay character, though this was published in the late 80s, so somewhat to be expected. The narrator was enjoyable. I am interested in checking out more in the series, but neither my library nor Hoopla has further audiobooks, so I'll just get book books, as I wasn't into it enough to want to spend money on it.

Chef's Secret
Most recent book in the Front Desk series of middle grade novels about a tween (now teen) Chinese-American girl who works at her family's motel. I really liked the earlier books but this one was such a disappointment. There had been little bits of romance between the MC and her male best friend in the previous couple books, but this one was not only entirely romance focused, but was from the POV of said boy, rather than the previous MC. I do not like him as a narrator and just found the romance plot of thirteen-year-olds dreadfully boring. It seems like this might be the last book in the series, but if it's not, I'll probably check out the summary/reviews before reading any further books rather than just automatically checking it out. I prefer MG over YA precisely because of the lack of romance focus (I don't mind books where the main plot is a romance, though it's not my favorite genre, but so much YA theoretically has another plot but it's actually all about choosing between two cute boys or whatever), so having it be the main plot here was a disappointment.

Yellow Stringer
This was a Hoopla bonus read or whatever they call it. Previously my library allowed you to check out six things a month with Hoopla, but recently it was cut down to four, so I assume Hoopla increased their prices or something and the library had to go down to a lower tier. Disappointing, but since I'd reached my max, I checked out the list of things you can borrow without having it count towards your total, and this was one of them. Not sure I would have checked it out otherwise. It's an English language comic done in manga style (specifically it very much reminds me of Detective Conan). A reporter for a tabloid is one of the few people who knows the articles she writes are about real supernatural events, rather than just sensational stories. Her new partner is a former cop who is sceptical until mummies start attacking them. The first several chapters are part of one longer story, and then there's a few more stand-alones. They're all just fine. It says volume one, but it's been several years and no sign of any further volumes, so it's probably abandoned. It was fine, but not something I'll bother checking up on to see if any more are ever released.
